Facts behind celebrating mother's day

The modern celebration of Mother's Day has its roots in the efforts of Anna Jarvis, an American activist, who campaigned for a designated day to honor mothers. Anna Jarvis was inspired by her own mother, Ann Jarvis, who was a peace activist and had expressed a desire for a day to honor mothers and promote peace.

After Ann Jarvis passed away in 1905, Anna Jarvis embarked on a mission to fulfill her mother's wish. She organized the first official Mother's Day service in 1908 at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia, where her mother had taught Sunday school. The service was intended to honor not only her own mother but also mothers in general.

Anna Jarvis worked tirelessly to establish Mother's Day as a recognized holiday, and her efforts gained widespread support. She wrote letters to influential people, including politicians, business leaders, and newspapers, urging them to endorse the idea of a national Mother's Day. Eventually, her persistence paid off when President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation in 1914 designating Mother's Day as a national holiday to be celebrated on the second Sunday in May.

However, over time, Anna Jarvis became disillusioned with the commercialization and exploitation of Mother's Day. She had envisioned the day as a personal and heartfelt expression of love and gratitude, but it had become increasingly focused on commercial activities such as buying gifts, flowers, and greeting cards. Anna Jarvis spent the latter part of her life campaigning against the commercialization of Mother's Day and even tried to have the holiday removed from the calendar.

Despite Anna Jarvis's efforts to preserve the original intention of Mother's Day, it has continued to be celebrated globally as a day to honor and appreciate mothers. While the commercial aspect remains prevalent, many individuals and families still use the occasion to express genuine love, gratitude, and appreciation for their mothers and mother figures in more personal and meaningful ways
